The Magic Shop - Chapter XV

Chapter XV - At the Mall, Part 2

Note: This is the last chapter I have completed, for now. Chapter 16 should be done pretty soon, but after that, Magic Shop posts will slow down for a bit. From here on out, the caption schedule is going to change to Mon/Wed/Fri at 12PM Pacific Time. Hope ya'll have enjoyed the series so far!

"Would you mind getting the food? My plan for Jake wearing the bracelet kind of needs him to not see me until just before for it to work," Brooke says.

"What exactly is your plan?" You ask curiously.

"My name is Brandon Greco," she says in a very professional and authoritative voice. "My mother, Suzanne, is the CEO of Subway, and she's sent me on a little tour to check on all the stores in this region since sales are looking a little low."

"And you know a lot about Subway's operations, do you?" You ask with a raised eyebrow.

"I was an assistant manager for 3 years babe, I know more than you'd think," Brooke says.

"Really? I never knew that. I mean I knew you worked there but not that you managed for so long," you say surprised. "Either you never told me or that's another reality difference."

"Well, as far as this reality goes, I pretty much got Jake the job. Anyway, you'll have to get the blue one on Payton first. Then when Jake goes to shake my hand, the bracelet 'accidentally' slips onto his wrist - it's big enough that it should slip right over his hand like it did with yours. Then I just keep shaking his hand until that light goes away."

"Hmm..." You say, thinking hard. "It's probably not the best plan ever, but it's better than anything I've got. Just be careful though. If it slips back on to your wrist before you're done, you're going to stick my body with Payton's vagina."

"Don't worry babe, I got this," she says confidently.

"Alright," you say, still not completely sure. "What do you want to eat?"

After Brooke gives you her order, you go and stand in line while she keeps an eye on Payton and Jake. While you wait, you decide to text Mei.

"Weird question. I'm starting to think and act like Brooke more and more. I'm noticing the same is happening to her but not as much. Have I been in her body too long?"

You step forward as the line moves, reaching the counter. You give the person your order and Brooke's, tapping your nails on the back of the phone. After about a minute, the phone vibrates.

"Your soul is molding to her body and that includes the brain. You should be fine when you are yourself again. She may be getting comfortable in your body and acting like you would because of your body's habits. Especially if you are out in public."

You read the text a couple of times. You have no reason not to trust Mei, but her response doesn't make you feel much better about the situation.

"Makes sense. Thanks." You text back.

You take the food and go back to the table, where Brooke is playing a game on your phone. Neither of you say much while you eat, preferring to keep your eyes on your targets.

"Can I ask you something?" You ask after a long period of silence.

"Sure," Brooke says with a mouth full of food.

"Are you enjoying being in my body?"

"It's been pretty fun so far," she says after swallowing. "Why?"

"I've noticed today that I'm starting to think and act more like you, and I've sort of noticed you doing the same thing. I mean, I ran into Krista a little while ago, and the longer I was talking to her, the more it felt like you were doing the talking for me. I actually told her I dressed like this so you would keep your eyes on me today while we're here. And then you made that joke about me being a thirsty bitch... That's not really like you, that's more like me," you say, wiping your hands and resting them in your lap.

"It was just a joke babe," Brooke says. "I figured you would've found it funny."

"It just seemed weird coming from you is all. Even if you are me. I texted Mei while I was in line and she sa-"

"Hang on, they're moving," Brooke cuts you off. You look over to see Payton and Jake's fuzzy figures standing up from their table. They exchange a hug, then a slow kiss. Even though you can't see them that clearly, you can see that their kiss had meaning and love behind it, and your face reflexively scrunches up. Shortly after, they depart - Payton walking back toward your table, and Jake going back into one of the employee hallways that runs behind all of the stores. Brooke puts her head down so as not to be seen when Payton passes your table, and once again she barely even realizes you're there. Once out of earshot, you tap Brooke on the arm to let her know the coast is clear.

"Alright. I think we should wait another 15 or 20 minutes," Brooke says. "That way she won't be as quick to question why he didn't just give her the bracelet just now."

You nod in agreement and go back to eating your food. After a few minutes in silence, you look up to see Brooke has hardly touched her food. Instead, she has her fist pressed against her mouth, and she's watching you eat.

"You look like you want to say something," you say with a raised eyebrow.

"I'm just thinking," she says, moving her hand to rest on her cheek.

"Thinking about what?"

"Well," she starts slowly. "You're not from this reality or timeline or whatever. But obviously yours has to be at least mostly similar to this one. I was thinking about what might be different about the two, like earlier with my eyebrow. And I was also thinking about your situation. Everything you've gone through... I don't know why but it just really started to hit me," Brooke says with a half frown. You reach across the table and hold her hands, rubbing your manicured thumb across the tops of her hands. You feel your stomach sink just a little, knowing that Brooke has always been emotionally empathetic - sometimes to a fault.

"Don't worry baby," you say, offering a small smile. "It hasn't been easy, but it'll all be worth it soon." You can see a small tear forming in her eye, so you squeeze her hands tighter for reassurance.

"I just... I don't know how you haven't completely broken down. I know I would have..."

"Oh trust me, I've shed my fair share of tears over all this," you say with a soft laugh. "But I'm just doing what I have to. For us... For you."

Brooke brings your hands up to her face and presses them against her lips, closing her eyes and breathing deeply. "I just can't stop thinking about it... How freaked out you must have been..."

"It's all in the past now," you say. "Come on, you'll feel better if you eat."

Brooke looks down at her food, trying her best not to cry. You pick up a few fries off her tray and start poking them at her mouth until a smile forms on her face. She shakes her head and rolls her eyes, then opens her mouth to eat them.

"You're really good at these girlfriend duties, you know," she says after she swallows the fries.

"I learned from the best," you say, giving her a smile.

Brooke sticks out her tongue at you and picks up some more fries. You lean back in the chair and crack your back, then take a look around the food court. Business seems to be picking up, the number of people at the mall having easily doubles since you arrived.

Both of you keeps your heads in your phones until the time comes, Brooke eating about three quarters of her meal before deciding she's done with it. You clear off the table and walk the tray of trash to the garbage can. With each step you can feel your feet aching more and more, tempting you to remove the heels from your feet. After dumping everything, you turn around to see Brooke standing right behind you, holding the blue bracelet.

"So I was thinking I could just tell him the pink bracelet is like a breast cancer awareness thing," Brooke says. You take the blue bracelet from her, thinking about it for a moment.

"That might actually be better, yeah," you say, nodding slowly and tucking the bracelet into your bag. "I just wish there were a way to do this where we could keep the bracelets afterwards."

"Oh, I have a feeling that neither of them will want to keep their bracelets," Brooke smirks. Even with her in your body, you can see that mischievous look in her eye that both excites and frightens you.

You nod slowly with an eyebrow raised. "Do I want to know?" Brooke just smiles and shakes her head no. "I didn't think so. Alright, I'll head over to Victoria's Secret and I'll text you as soon as she's wearing the bracelet, so keep and eye on your phone. My phone... Whatever. Wish me luck," you say with a half smile.

Brooke leans down and kisses you, and you can feel her excitement as your lips press together. Her lips form a smile just before she pulls away from the kiss. "Good luck!"

You return her smile and turn away, beginning your trek back to the lingerie store. Trying to distract yourself from your feet as you walk, you begin to think about what other small differences there might be in this alternate reality. Everything appears the same on the surface, but as you begin to think harder you realizes the differences could be incredibly minute. Maybe there's a thumb tack just slightly out of place in someone's wall somewhere, or maybe a ketchup bottle in a bar has a few more drops in it that there would be back home. Focusing back on your surroundings, you realize you're already at the store.

Gathering up your courage, you take a deep breath and step inside the store again. The same flamboyant man looks up from the desk and smiles at you.

"Welcome back," he says with a smile.

"Thanks," you say with a little smirk. "Um, I'm looking for a girl named Payton, is she here? Her boyfriend asked me to bring her something," you say, glancing around the store.

"Her boyfriend? Which one?" The man ask sarcastically. You can't help but raise an eyebrow and let out a little laugh. "I'm kidding, of course, I'm kidding," he says, but somehow you get the feeling there's a kernel of truth behind that. "Payton!" He yells down an aisle, raising a hand and motioning for her to come up front.

A few seconds later she rounds the corner, and your heart skips a beat again. The man makes a motion, and Payton turns her attention towards you. "How can I help you?" She asks. You swallow hard, and start digging around in your purse.

"I just, uh, had an interview with Jake over at Subway, he asked me to bring this to you," you say, pulling the bracelet out of the bag and handing it over to her. "He said he forgot to give it to you earlier, but he wanted you to have it right away, didn't want to wait," you say, trying not to fumble your words. Payton takes the bracelet and begins inspecting it, a smile forming on her face.

"That's so sweet," she says, putting the bracelet on. "Such a pretty color too. Kind of weird for him to a stranger though." She twirls it on her wrist. "Thanks for bringing it to me, um... What was your name?"

"Oh, uh, I'm Ana," you say, deciding to use Brooke's middle name. "And he's not really a stranger, he was friends with my brother in high school."

"Ah, I see, that makes sense." She says. You let out a small sigh of relief. "Thank you Ana, I hope you get the job!" Payton says.

"Thanks, me too," you say, giving a fake smile. "Have a good day."

"You too!" Payton says, walking away happily.

"Ta ta, Ana," the flamboyant man waves with a smile. You give him a small finger-wave and walk back out of the store. You pull the phone out of the purse, and text Brooke "She's wearing the bracelet. I'll be at GameStop. BE CAREFUL."

Almost immediately she replies with a thumbs up emoji. Even though this whole thing was your idea, you can't help but feel a sense of worry. Putting the phone away, you head over to GameStop. Upon entering, a fat, acne riddled man-child behind the counter greets you.

"Welcome to GameStop, what can I do you for?" He says, emphasizing the word 'you'.

"Just looking," you say shortly, glaring at him and gritting your teeth.

"Well my name is Gus, if there's anything you need m'lady, please don't hesitate to ask," he says with a smile. The word 'm'lady' practically makes your skin crawl, and you want to say something to him, but decide against it. Knocking out one creepy dude seems like enough for today.

"Thanks," you say, turning and heading toward the Xbox section. I need a new controller, you think to yourself, but $60 of Brooke's money is a bit expensive, even if I do pay her back.

You spend the next 15 minutes idly browsing, trying to ignore the stares of men going in and out of the store. You pull your phone out, but still no word from Brooke. Getting worried, you poke your head out of the store and glance around hoping to see her, but no such luck.

"???" You type on the phone. Just before you can hit send, the phone vibrates and you receive a text from Brooke. "Call me ASAP. No matter what I say keep the convo going."

Immediately you place the call, and after a couple of rings Brooke picks up.

"Brandon here," you hear her say in your voice on the other end.

"What's going on? Where are you?" You ask worriedly.

"Ah yes, I'm just going over everything with Jake here at store 04219, actually I'm just about finished here but it looks like everything adds up." She says. She must have had a better plan than you realized. Wait, you think, 4219? There's something familiar about those numbers.

"So you haven't told him about the, uh, breast cancer bracelets then?" You ask. Where have you heard those numbers before?

"No," Brooke says. "I think it's just due to the fact that this store is in a mall. People would rather stay at home and order from Amazon or eBay, you know, instead of buying from a store, and that hurts the food court here as well." She's definitely putting on a good show, at least.

"Well hurry up. My feet are killing me. Creepy dudes keep staring at me. I want to go home now," you say.

"Sure, I can be on a plane in the next, say, three hours," Brooke said. "I only have three stores left after this for today. Go ahead and email me the next round, we'll talk again soon."

"Just, hurry up, okay?" You said, hearing the worry in your own voice. "And be careful!"

"Will do," she says. "Alright, talk to you soon. Bye."

Putting the phone away, you let out a long, exasperated sigh. Suddenly it hits you. 4219. Forty two nineteen. $42.19 - exactly how much the necklaces cost. That absolutely can't be a coincidence... But what could it mean?

You decide to sit at one of the two-person tables outside GameStop, and another 5 minutes goes by before you see Brooke in your body walking toward you, clutching the pink bracelet. She seems ecstatic, though, as if the plan went off without a hitch.

"Umm..." You start to say as she gets within earshot, motioning to the bracelet and raising an eyebrow.

"That went much better than I expec- oh, hang on," Brooke says. She walks past you, and you turn around to see where she's going. "Payton!" she says rather loudly. Squinting your eyes, you can just make out Payton's fuzzy outline.

"Oh god, it was you, wasn't it?!" She screamed, attempting to slap Brooke in the face. Brooke catches her hand, and takes the blue bracelet off Payton's wrist before speaking again.

"If you want it fixed, I suggest you go talk to Jake," Brooke says calmly. Payton snatches her hand away and starts fast walking towards Subway, tears falling from her face.

"Brooke, what the hell?" You ask, shocked at what just happened.

"On that note, I think it's time we get out of here. Come on, I'll explain on the way."
